These two case studies illustrate the Progressive Audiologic Tinnitus Management approach for two patients.

Case Study 1—Bob

  • Level 1: Bob was referred to audiology by primary care for tinnitus and hearing loss complaints.
  • Level 2: The audiologic evaluation revealed a bilateral high-frequency sensorineural hearing loss. Bob was fit with hearing aids bilaterally. Results of the Tinnitus and Hearing Survey revealed that he was a good candidate for Level 3 group education. Bob was referred to mental health based on positive results of a mental health screening questionnaire, and his statements including, "I don't know how much longer I can stand this tinnitus." Bob received the tinnitus self-help workbook and was advised to attend the Level 3 group education sessions.
  • Level 3: Bob participated in the group sessions. He continued to use the techniques he learned, but was still unable to manage his tinnitus adequately.
  • Level 4: Bob returned for a tinnitus evaluation. The results of the evaluation led Bob and his audiologist to return the hearing aids for credit and order combination instruments. Bob was scheduled for his first appointment for individualized tinnitus management.
  • Level 5: Bob attended multiple appointments with his audiologist over six months. In addition, an individualized management plan was developed that resulted in Bob feeling satisfied with how well his tinnitus was managed.

Case Study 2—Betty

  • Level 1: Betty was referred to audiology by primary care because of intermittent bilateral tinnitus.
  • Level 2: The audiologic evaluation revealed that Betty has normal hearing bilaterally. Results of the Tinnitus and Hearing Survey revealed that she was a good candidate for Level 3 group education. Betty was given a tinnitus workbook and encouraged to participate in Level 3 group education.
  • Level 3: Betty attended group education and learned the skills she needed to self-manage her tinnitus. She was encouraged to call the clinic if she had any further questions or concerns.
