Parents play an important role in facilitating communication between the CI center and the school. To enhance this partnership, parents can:
-
Share information. Ask for copies of the child's map, programming reports, and evaluation results, and then deliver them personally to the
designated school professional.
-
Ask for feedback. Obtain feedback from teachers that may be helpful to the CI audiologist or speech-language pathologist.
-
Inform teachers about appointments. Provide teachers with information about programming appointments and changes in the child's equipment, such as an upgrade to a new or different speech processor. Such changes may affect FM compatibility (see article on page 22), and the teacher's ability to adequately and appropriately troubleshoot the device.
-
Encourage communication between school and CI center. Parents should encourage school personnel to visit the CI center to better understand the cochlear implant process, and encourage the CI center clinicians to visit the child's school to better understand the child's educational setting and to provide training and recommendations regarding use of the cochlear implant, if requested.
