Communication Impact of Blast Injuries

Communication and swallowing impairments that may result from blast injuries (in isolation or combination):

  • Cognitive communication impairments related to traumatic brain injury (TBI)
  • Swallowing impairments
  • Aphasia (due to stroke or focal traumatic brain injury)
  • Motor speech impairment
  • Oral and facial burns or other trauma that impacts communication
  • Smoke inhalation and resulting laryngeal trauma that impacts communication
  • Medical conditions requiring trach and vent
  • Hearing loss
