Continuing Education (CE)

  • ASHA has been approved by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET) as a Licensed Standards User (LSU) thus furthering the recognition and acceptance of ASHA CEUs by licensing and certifying agencies regulating speech-language pathologists, audiologists, and speech, language, hearing scientists. ASHA is a charter member of this program.
  • An online tutorial developed by ASHA CE for new Continuing Education Administrators (CEAs) assists CEAs with developing, conducting, and evaluating CE courses, and helps to ensure that ASHA CEUs are efficiently posted to participants' ASHA CE Registry transcripts.
  • ASHA CE course and participant records for 2004 and 2005 were transmitted to the Florida Board of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology's continuing education tracking system, CE Broker. To facilitate the transfer of this information, participants must submit their Florida license number and give ASHA permission to transmit their ASHA CEUs (or call 800-498-2071).
  • ASHA members registered for the 100th Learn & Earn journal study group this year. This CE opportunity allows members to earn ASHA CEUs for participating in professional learning experiences including publishing articles in peer-reviewed publications, learning related to clinical fellow supervision, earning academic credit, preparing and providing instruction, and journal study groups.

Government Relations

  • Changed national Medicare policy allowing coverage of mobile videofluoroscopic studies and convinced a fiscal intermediary to retract a local Medicare policy requiring a physician visit before dysphagia treatment.
  • Worked with Congress and the Center for Medicaid and Medicare Services to develop an exception process for the therapy caps using data from ASHA's National Outcomes Measurement System (NOMS).
  • Reversed a 4.4% across-the-board cut in Medicare reimbursement rates.

  • ASHA Health Care 2005, in Palm Springs, CA, featured two-day concurrent programs on pediatric dysphagia, voice, and dementia. ASHA Health Care 2006 was in Nashville, TN on April 1-2, focusing on early intervention, medically fragile patients, and adult neurogenics.

Product Marketing

  • Speech-language pathologists and audiologists created events around Better Hearing and Speech Month's theme of Communication for Life during 2005. Products such as T-shirts, activity guides, banners, posters, and balloons, as well as free giveaways, were created to help promote the professions. Go to ASHA's Better Hearing and Speech Month Web page.
  • ASHA produced a variety of new logo products and updated some of the older products to give them a fresh, new look. Whether a jacket, padfolio, or travel mug, all of these products create a way for ASHA members to show their affiliation and membership with the Association.
  • New multi-media products and some established products are now available in DVD format, in addition to VHS-for example, Feeding Individuals with Swallowing Disorders: An Inservice Training Tool is a new video designed to help SLPs educate staff who routinely feed patients.
  • Beautiful picture books for children and reference books for caregivers about people with communication disorders are now available to help open up conversations and educate about the various communication disorders affecting over 46 million Americans.
  • The popular "How Does Your Child Hear and Talk" brochure was reformatted into an English and Spanish clipboard; and the 1996 Guide to Successful Private Practice has been updated and addresses considerations for starting a private practice and issues related to maintenance and growth of an existing practice.

Stories highlighted the damaging effects of portable music players on one's hearing if not used properly and were covered in nine of the top 10 media markets and 27 of the top 30 (90%).
  • A television news story on the dangers of noise and hearing health aired on 41 NBC affiliates in more than 15 states across the country. The story, which featured an audiologist measuring decibel levels of everyday sounds in a downtown environment, provided viewers with advice on ways to protect their hearing. ASHA contributed to or placed additional stories on communication disorders and the professions in hundreds of other publications.

Publications

  • In response to reader feedback, The ASHA Leader's frequency changed to 16 regular issues per year plus the Convention program.
  • In response to audiology members, The ASHA Leader launched a new audiology page to specifically highlight audiology news. Also, more audiology features were added to the editorial calendar.
