Several ASHA members who are participating in the "Learn & Earn" program developed by the Association's continuing education unit are giving positive feedback on the program, which provides a simple way to earn ASHA CEUs for learning experiences they have always engaged in and meets their professional needs.
Lynn Ann Roberts can still hear her professors reminding her to continue to read and study professional journals. So she was intrigued while visiting ASHA's Web site to see the launch of the Learn & Earn journal study program. She downloaded the information and found an easy-to-follow guide for setting up a journal study group. She and her colleagues in a skilled nursing facility decided to develop a plan to study communication interventions for patients with Alzheimer's disease. The group likes the format so much that they're planning two more sessions for next year. Roberts notes that, although traditional continuing education programs are easily accessible, the activities are either expensive, require travel and missed work time, or aren't applicable to her clinical service needs.
Janet Patterson's career development plan includes continuing education. However, there are times when the activities she finds important to her professional growth don't lend themselves to earning ASHA CEUs. That's changing. While preparing an invited presentation, Patterson was pleased to learn of the preparing and providing instruction program. As Patterson says, this program "acknowledges a form of active learning (teacher as learner)." The process of applying for the Learn & Earn program was straightforward and online, a definite plus for a busy professor at California State University-Hayward.
Maureen McCarron is a real fan of academic courses as a means of increasing her skills and knowledge. McCarron has earned three "Awards for Continuing Education" through her participation in academic courses over the years. Like many members, she was disappointed when the academic credit conversion program ended. But in August she received an e-mail announcing the earning academic credit program. This program fits well with her professional goals; she is enrolled in an educational administration post-graduate program. McCarron works in a school setting, and the earning academic credit program allows her to meet her credentialing requirements for the department of education and eventually ASHA.
Each of these members expressed interest in participating in continuing education opportunities that were individualized and targeted to their professional needs. The Learn & Earn program provides that mechanism. You decide what to study and complete a simple application (available in the Continuing Education section). The process is streamlined and user-friendly.
