ASHA is committed to addressing the critical shortage and continuing attrition of PhD-level faculty that will affect professional preparation and conduct of research in communication sciences and disorders (CSD). To address this issue, ASHA seeks to identify and support an innovative program designed to recruit and educate doctoral students who will enter academic settings as a career. The recipient program will serve as a model for the development of other similar personnel preparation programs at the doctoral level in CSD.
Who is eligible to receive the award?
The award will go to an academic program that is designed to prepare doctoral students to teach and conduct basic or applied research at institutions of higher education in the discipline of communication sciences and disorders.
What kind of program will be funded?
This award program is intended to identify and support an innovative program designed to recruit and educate doctoral students who will enter academic settings as a career in communication sciences and disorders. An innovative program will have features that may include, but are not limited to:
• wider/greater access to prospective students
• reduced geographic barriers
• more flexible schedules
• collaborative efforts among campus programs across universities
• recruitment and retention, including minority recruitment
• strong teaching focus
• strong research education
• innovative instructional delivery models
How many grants will be awarded?
One academic program will be awarded a maximum of $50,000 per year for three years. Funding may be used for program development, recruitment, student funding (a maximum of three students, not to exceed $10,000 per student), faculty mentors (not to exceed $2,000 per mentor), and equipment to support innovative instructional delivery models. A project that contains a strong evaluation component sufficient to demonstrate the effectiveness of the educational program’s goal to have doctoral students enter the university teaching ranks is more likely to be funded at a higher level than a project that does not contain such a component.
How can my doctoral program apply?
To enter, a program must submit a project abstract, narrative, timelines/schedule for completing the project, a list of project personnel and areas of expertise related to the project, budget information, and literature cited.
