Schools 2003, ASHA’s annual conference dedicated to school-based practice, will be held July 11–July 13 in Anaheim, CA. The conference, to be held at the Anaheim Marriott Hotel, will offer in-depth updates on clinical topics, top national speakers, and subject experts. The conference also will feature poster sessions, problem-solving roundtable discussions, and an exhibit hall showcasing the newest products and services for school-based speech-language pathologists.
"This conference will provide clinicians with practical, hands-on strategies to use in their clinical practice and contacts who are only an e-mail away to provide ongoing support and discussion," says SLP Franklin Bender, president-elect of the Oregon Speech-Language-Hearing Association. "I would encourage any school-based SLP to attend. These conferences are well organized, clinically practical, and professionally rewarding."
Schools 2003 will feature three keynote addresses. On July 11, futurist Joyce Gioia will open the conference with "Create Your Own Future," a presentation that will help attendees examine major societal trends and their impact in the classroom. Later that day, pediatrician Melanie Tervalon will address "Cultural Humility: A New Approach for the Age of Cultural Competence," offering principles that can guide clinicians in their work with each child and family in our culturally and linguistically diverse country. At the conclusion of the conference on July 13, SLP Barbara Ehren will present "The Future is Ours," encouraging attendees to take charge of their professional destinies.
Schools 2003 also will offer attendees concurrent sessions on a variety of topics, including service delivery in the future, technology, cochlear implants, caseload/workload, IDEA, collaboration, literacy, and intervention for children who are bilingual (see page 19 for a complete list of concurrent sessions).
Other conference events will include:
- Foundation fun run/walk. Join your friends and colleagues at 6:30 a.m. on July 11 for a noncompetitive run/walk. Led by favorite Disney characters, this event will benefit the American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation. The 3.1-mile run or 1.5-mile walk will be followed by continental breakfast and a special drawing for free registration to the 2003 ASHA Convention in Chicago.
- Roundtable luncheon. This luncheon, to be held at noon on July 11, will provide attendees the opportunity to engage in focused but informal discussions of practical problems and solutions with fellow school-based clinicians, conference speakers, Executive Board members, and more.
- Reception with exhibitors. This event, to be held July 11 at 6 p.m., will offer attendees the chance to see the newest products and services for school-based SLPs while enjoying light hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar in the exhibit hall.
- Poster sessions. On the last morning of the conference, July 13, poster sessions relevant to school-based practice will be presented from 7:30–9 a.m. Attendees can talk one-on-one with presenters over a continental breakfast.
Conference registration costs $319 for ASHA members and $379 for nonmembers. Group discounts are available—register three or more individuals from the same school or organization and take $30 off each registration. Registration includes a copy of the "Schools 2003 Session Anthology," an evening reception, continental breakfast each day, and two luncheons. Conference participants can earn up to 1.7 ASHA CEUs.
The conference is supported by AGS Publishing, The Psychological Corporation, and Subaru.
