The ASHA Leader OnlineLETTERS

The Gift of Mentoring

I wish to commend Alex Johnson for his eloquent remarks on The "Face" of Higher Education. (The ASHA Leader, Feb. 7, 2006). Also a student of the 1970s, my first course in speech-language pathology was taught by Mack Steer at Purdue University. Today, as the instructor of a course, "Introduction to Graduate Studies in Speech-Language Pathology" at Eastern Michigan University, I emphasize an historical perspective of the field by teaching who the historical leaders in the field were. Students are required to read both historical and contemporary literature.

Dr. Johnson's remarks on mentoring were simple, but rang loud and clear. Higher educators must mentor students and boldly encourage the brightest to pursue higher degrees so as to join the ranks in higher education. To those students that I have had the honor to mentor over the years, thank you.
