Promoting Literature for Individuals With Aphasia

We were happy to see "Reading for Life: A Book Club for Individuals With Aphasia" in the Aug. 5 issue of The ASHA Leader. For the past five years, we have provided aphasia book clubs to members of the Aphasia Center of California. Individuals with mild, moderate, and even severe aphasia are now reading for pleasure through the use of large-print format books, unabridged audiotapes, and clinician-developed materials that provide participants with "reading ramps." In addition to these materials, participants tell us that the best part of the book club is their weekly discussion group. We are pleased to have heard from colleagues across the country who have developed programs promoting a connection to literature for individuals with aphasia. We will be presenting a poster about our aphasia book clubs at the Chicago ASHA Convention and invite all those interested to join us.
