Redefining Competency

I appreciated the editorial by Stan Goldberg in the April 29 issue, "Are We as a Profession Losing Our Heart?" His definition of competency, his questioning of how it is measured, and his questioning our expansion into new territories at the expense of our traditional services should make our profession take notice. We are in an era of rapidly expanding services. We are required to document our competencies in all settings, and are required to document our continuing education more rigorously than ever before. Despite this, those of us who take care of children with cleft palates are finding a dramatic decrease in the number of SLPs in community practice who are adequately prepared to provide appropriate services for these children. True competency may lie in understanding our own inadequacies and in seeking to rectify them to best meet our clients' needs. Can it be addressed?
