After reading the posting regarding the ASHA Health Care 2004 Conference, I went to the ASHA Web site to find out all about it. I like the content of the conference; however, I am very disappointed with the registration cost and the place chosen for it. I work in a state hospital that is currently broke, and consequently there is no available continuing education money. On top of this, my salary is at best acceptable. I am sure that this is the case with a large number of hospital-based providers. How can ASHA not realize that we cannot be expected to attend expensive conferences at world-class hotels if we do not get paid to support these expensive tastes? Even a dental hygienist with barely two years of formal education has a higher starting salary than a Clinical Fellow or even a recently certified SLP. Wake up ASHA, your jobs are secure because our CCCs are held ransom, but our jobs are not. Therefore, you should plan your continuing education activities accordingly.
