Featured Question – What is the role of the SLP in the NICU?
ASHA has published a number of documents related to the role of the SLP in the NICU, as well as what the SLP needs to know and be able to do when working in this environment. ASHA has adopted the position that "speech-language pathologists play a significant role in the assessment and intervention of stable preterm and medically compromised preterm and term infants as well as infants with anatomic, physiologic, and neurologic disorders."
Working in this environment requires specialized knowledge and skills due to the highly complex medical condition of infants in the NICU. In addition, the SLP must be able to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary team, including the families and caregivers.
