(Lincoln, NE - November 12, 2007) Jeff Hoffman, Health Program Manager at the Nebraska Newborn Hearing Screening Program will be awarded the American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation's Louis M. Di Carlo Award for Recent Clinical Achievement Award during the 2007 Convention of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), November 15-17 in Boston, Massachusetts.
The honor recognizes and honors the significant accomplishments to advance clinical service.
Jeff Hoffman is honored for his instrumental role in managing the successful Nebraska Early Hearing Detection and Intervention Program. In 2000, just 16% of the birthing hospitals in Nebraska conducted targeted or universal newborn hearing screening and just 36% of newborns received hearing screening during birth admission. Today, 100% of the birthing hospitals have programs, and 99.4% of all newborn babies in Nebraska receive hearing screening during birth admission. Almost half of all the newborns receive both otoacoustic emissions and auditory brainstem response assessments. The ASHFoundation commends Hoffman for his expert coordination of data and services, raising awareness of the program's importance, implementing critical follow up for families with infants who have hearing impairment and expanding clinical education opportunities for state audiologists.
The annual ASHA convention is the most comprehensive development conference for speech-language pathologists, audiologists, and speech, language and hearing scientists. It features more than 1,500 educational sessions that highlight the latest developments in research and clinical practices for professionals who provide services in schools, hospitals, health care centers, rehabilitation clinics, and other practice settings.
