Announcements

Perspectives is going GREEN to save some GREEN in 2008!

In 2008, Special Interest Division member publications, Perspectives, will be published online only. The Divisions are going to this new format:

  • To save some GREEN. Increases in content and frequency of publication coupled with increasing postage costs have put a strain on Division budgets. Publishing online only will free up resources that can be allocated to other Division programs and member benefits.
  • To be more GREEN. Online publishing is a positive step environmentally; it saves resources (paper, energy) associated with publishing hardcopy.
  • To respond to affiliates' interests in accessing content online.
  • To provide new benefits (e.g., archived issues).

Division 5 sponsored a live forum event, Tuesday, April 17, 2007, 8-10 pm EDT.

During these "office hours," experts answered your questions about treatment of cleft palate, such as:

  • Does oral motor therapy have any role in treating cleft palate speech errors?
  • How do I recognize and treat learned nasal emission patterns?
  • What therapy tools are used for eliminating cleft palate speech errors (e.g. glottal stops and other compensatory misarticulations)?
  • What should I treat (not treat)?

Our guest experts were:

  • Judy Trost-Cardamone, Ph.D., Professor, California State University at Northridge, Northridge, California and Speech Consultant, Ventura County Medical Center Cleft Lip and Palate Clinic, Ventura, California
  • Karen Golding-Kushner, Ph.D., Private Practice, Central New Jersey and Executive Director, Velo-cardio-facial Syndrome Educational Foundation, Inc.

Willard R. Zemlin Lecture

The Willard R. Zemlin Lecture in Speech Science commemorates the life and work of the late Willard R. Zemlin, who made significant contributions to communication sciences through his texts detailing the anatomy and physiology of the speech and hearing mechanism.

The lecture, an annual event at the ASHA Convention, honors another speech scientist who has demonstrated a record of outstanding contributions to the broad spectrum of issues concerning speech science. Division 5 and Allyn & Bacon, publisher of Zemlin's texts, sponsor the event; Allyn & Bacon provides a $1,000 stipend for the speaker and Division 5 covers the speaker's expenses.

This year's lecture, by Frank Guenther, is "The Neural Control of Speech". Division 5 thanks Dr. Guenther for his work and congratulates him on this recognition of his contributions to the professions.

Previous lectures are:

  • 2000 - Maureen L. Stone, "Anatomy and Physiology 2000: Building on the Work of Willard R. Zemlin"
  • 2001 - Raymond D. Kent, "Physiology and Speech Learning 2001: Building on the Work of Willard R. Zemlin"
  • 2002 - Ingo R. Titze, "How Far Can the Vocal Folds Travel?"
  • 2003 - Steven M. Barlow, "Physiological Studies of the Human Vocal Tract Across the Lifespan"
  • 2004 - Joseph S. Perkell, "Sensorimotor Control of Speech Production"
  • 2005 - Thomas J. Hixon, "Perspectives on Normal Speech Breathing"
  • 2006 - Kiyoshi Honda, "Visualization of Speech Production Mechanisms"
