Washington State Characteristics of Licensure Law

The information below is collected from state licensure boards or regulatory agencies responsible for regulating the professions of Speech-Language Pathology and/or Audiology. It is intended for informational use only, and should not be construed as legal advice.

Initial Licensure Requirements

  1. Master's degree or equivalent or doctorate degree or equivalent
  2. Supervised clinical practicum
  3. Thirty-six weeks full-time or part time equivalent postgraduate professional work experience
  4. Passage of an exam
  5. Completion of 4 clock hours in AIDS education

Exemptions

  1. Military or federal government employees
  2. Individuals licensed in other states while appearing as clinicians of bona fide educational seminars sponsored by professional associations so long as such activities do not go beyond the scope of practice

Reciprocity

Applicants licensed in another state with equivalent standards may be credentialed to practice in Washington.

Interim Practice/Temporary Licensure

Clinical fellows must obtain an interim permit.

Continuing Education Requirement for Licensure Renewal

Hearing Aid Dispensing

Audiologists may dispense under certification for audiology.

Support Personnel

The statutes and rules do not directly address the regulation of support personnel, however, the following statement appears: "Recognizing the trend in utilization of speech-language pathologist assistants and audiologist assistants across practice settings, the Board shall, on an ongoing basis, collect data on the number of assistants in specific practice settings, supervisor to assistant ratios and the level of education and training of assistants."

Note

  • All jurisdictions require applicants to achieve a passing score on a national exam, and all but Nevada, North Dakota, and Virginia require applicants to complete a post graduate professional experience requirement.
  • The term "clinical fellow," used throughout, means a person completing the post graduate professional experience requirement.
