Audiologist or Speech-Language Pathologist

Audiologist
State Licensure
- Postgraduate degree in audiology from an accredited school
- Completion of nine months supervised professional employment
- Passage of an examination

16 hours of continuing education per license period
Speech-Language Pathologist
Speech-Language Therapist - Standard Professional Certificate
The certificate is issued after an evaluation of an individual holding the initial certification for three years.
Speech-Language Therapist - Initial Certification (Advanced Level)
- Master's degree (completion of an advanced program approved for the training of Speech Correctionists)
- Minimum qualifying score on the State Board of Education required examination
Speech-Language Therapist - Initial Certification (valid for three years)
- Bachelor's degree
- Professional teaching certificate at elementary, middle school, or secondary level
- Minimum qualifying score on State Board of Education required examination
- Endorsement of training institution certifying competence in conducting speech therapy in public school situations
- Specialized preparation - 36 semester hours:
- Basic area (six semester hours)
- Speech pathology and/or correction courses (12 semester hours)
- Audiology (three semester hours)
- Psychology (six semester hours)
- Basic course in public speaking (three semester hours)
- Directed teaching in speech correction. 200 clock hours under supervision of qualified therapist. Recommended that a minimum of 90 hours of the practicum be obtained in a public school situation.
Conditional Certificate for Speech-Language Pathology
A conditional certificate will be issued to those persons who hold a CCC in Speech Pathology issued by ASHA or have completed a master's degree which includes the academic and clinical requirements for the ASHA CCC (not including clinical fellowship year) and presented the minimum qualifying score on the State Board of Education required examination.
- The applicant must verify an employment offer by a South Carolina public school district.
- The conditional certificate will be effective for one academic year and will be converted to the standard professional certificate upon a successful evaluation of duties during the initial year of employment.
Continuing Education Requirement
120 renewal credits are required every five years. Any educator who has not earned a master's degree must earn 60 renewal credits in graduate-level coursework to renew the current certificate.
Emergency Certification
The Program of Alternative Certification for Educators (PACE) was established to enable degreed individuals, who otherwise do not meet certification requirements, to gain employment in public schools in a critical need subject area teaching position as determined annually by the State Board of Education. Individuals must have an earned bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college with a major in a South Carolina certification area. Participants can be evaluated for a major equivalent if they have thirty or more semester hours earned in content area coursework, twenty-one of which were earned at the junior or senior level or above. Individuals must also obtain a passing score on the appropriate Praxis II subject area examination and show two-years full time work experience. The work experience does not have to be in the area of teaching. The area of speech-language pathology has not been deemed a critical need subject area for 2005-2006.
