Ohio Characteristics of State Teacher Requirements

The following information summarizes the requirements currently necessary to begin work in the public school system as an:

Audiologist or Speech-Language Pathologist

The information below has been collected by researching individual state department of education regulations and policy documents, state administrative code provisions and by contacting each state department of education. State Licensure

Professional Pupil Services License

The professional pupil services license, valid for five years for working with learners at all levels, shall be issued to an individual deemed to be of good moral character who has successfully completed an approved program of preparation and who is recommended by the dean or head of teacher education; who has completed an examination prescribed by the state board of education; and who has evidenced the education and experience requirements specified below.

School Audiologist

  1. Master's degree
  2. Current license to practice audiology issued by the Ohio Board of Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology

Continuing Education Requirement

20 clock hours of continuing education per two-year period is required to maintain state license. No additional CE is required by the state board of education.

Speech-Language Pathologist

The professional pupil services license, valid for five years for working with learners at all levels, shall be issued to an individual deemed to be of good moral character who has successfully completed an approved program of preparation and who is recommended by the dean or head of teacher education, who has completed an examination prescribed by the state board of education, and who has evidenced the education and experience requirements specified below.

  1. Master's degree or equivalent (75 semester hours)
  2. 350 hour clinical practicum
  3. Completion of nine months full-time postgraduate professional experience; 70% of professional experience must be spent in direct clinical contact; if part-time employment is used to fulfill a part of the professional experience requirement, 100% of the minimum hours of part-time work per week must be spent in direct clinical contact
  4. Passage of an examination
