North Dakota Characteristics of State Teacher Requirements

The following information summarizes the requirements currently necessary to begin work in the public school system as an:

Audiologist or Speech-Language Pathologist

The information below has been collected by researching individual state department of education regulations and policy documents, state administrative code provisions and by contacting each state department of education. Please be advised that regulations and policy may change at any time, so always check with your state department of education for the most up-to-date information.

Audiologist

Audiologists in the public schools are contract employees and do not fall under specific teacher requirements of the State Department of Education. State licensure is typically required for practice in the schools.

Speech-Language Pathologist

Restricted Certificate in Speech Therapy

  1. Master's degree from an ASHA approved program or equivalent
  2. 350 hour clinical practicum - 100 hours must be in a school-based setting

Continuing Education Requirement

10 clock hours are required each year.

Support Personnel

Speech-language pathology paraprofessionals must have either been employed as a speech-language pathology paraprofessional on or before October 1, 2003 and have both a bachelor's degree in speech-language pathology or communication disorders and at least 100 clock hours of supervised field experience; or have completed an associate's or bachelor's degree which incorporates thirty hours of general college education, thirty hours of college education in the area of speech-language pathology and a minimum of one hundred clock hours of fieldwork experience supervised by a qualified speech-language pathologist.
