Initial Licensure Requirements
- Master's degree (60 semester hours) or equivalent
Note: "Equivalent" is defined as holding a bachelor's degree and at least 42 postbaccalaureate semester hours towards a master's degree, of which at least 30 shall be in the areas of speech-language pathology, audiology, or speech-language and hearing science; in addition, at least 21 of the 42 hours must have been obtained from a single college or university.
- Three hundred hour clinical practicum
- Nine months of full-time postgraduate professional experience
- Passage of an exam
Exemptions
- Hearing aid dealers
- Federal government employees
- Registered and practical nurses trained to perform audiometric testing under the direct supervision of a licensed physician
- Students properly identified as interns or trainees
Reciprocity
- The Board may waive the examination and grant a license to applicants who present proof of current licensure in a state with equivalent standards.
- The Board may waive the examination and grant a license to CCC holders.
Interim Practice/Temporary Licensure
- Clinical fellows shall apply for interim licensure; clinical fellows shall make immediate application to the Board for permanent licensure upon the completion of the postgraduate experience.
- A person with a baccalaureate in speech-language pathology but who does not hold a valid and current credential as a speech-hearing specialist issued by the Department of Education, shall apply for an interim license as a SLP assistant during the period of time he/she is completing the professional experience as established by the Board.
Continuing Ed. Requirement for Licensure Renewal
Fifteen CE hours per annual renewal cycle; a licensee holding one license may carry over up to 5 CE hours to the following renewal cycle and a dual license holder may carry over 8 CE hours.
Hearing Aid Dispensing
Audiologists who dispense hearing aids must obtain an HAD license
Support Personnel
Speech-language pathology assistants must be licensed. Requirements for licensure of speech-language pathology assistants:
- Practice limited to public schools and under the supervision of an appropriately qualified supervisor
- Baccalaureate degree in the area of speech-language pathology
- Completion of postgraduate professional experience deemed appropriate by the Board
- List on the application the name of the appropriately qualified supervisor who has agreed to provide supervision.
- Supervisors may not supervise any more than two assistants.
- Each speech-language pathology assistant must receive no less than 2 hours per week of documented direct supervision.
- Each speech-language pathology assistant must receive no less than 2 hours per week of documented indirect supervision.
Note
- The abbreviation SLP or SP stands for Speech Language Pathology or Pathologist, as appropriate, the abbreviation AUD stands for Audiology or Audiologist, as appropriate, and the abbreviation HAD stands for Hearing Aid Dealer.
- All jurisdictions require applicants to achieve a passing score on a national exam, and all but Nevada, North Dakota, and Virginia require applicants to complete a post graduate professional experience requirement.
- The term "clinical fellow," used throughout, means a person completing the post graduate professional experience requirement.
