Initial Licensure Requirements
- Master's degree or equivalent from an educational institution with standards consistent with those of the state universities of Kansas
Note: "Equivalent" means a bachelor's degree and at least 42 post baccalaureate semester hours towards a master's degree, of which 30 semester hours must be in the areas of speech-language pathology, audiology, or speech-language and hearing science; every applicant who has completed graduate hours toward a master's degree but has not received at least a master's degree shall obtain a master's equivalency validation from a Kansas college or university with a speech-language pathology or audiology program accredited by ASHA.
- Three hundred seventy-five-hour supervised clinical practicum (at least 250 hours at graduate level)
- Completion of supervised 9-month postgraduate professional experience
- Passage of an examination
Exemptions
- Persons employed by the federal government
- Health care providers under the Kansas Healing Arts Act
- Persons credentialed by the state as teachers of the deaf or hearing impaired
- Students properly identified as interns, trainees, or other such title clearly indicating their status
- Persons under the supervision of a licensed physician or surgeon
- Persons licensed to dispense or fit hearing aids
Reciprocity
The secretary may issue a license to a person licensed in another state if:
- Documentation from the issuing state is presented stating that the licensee is currently in good standing with no violations or sanctions pending or in effect.
- The applicant meets current educational, clinical practicum, postgraduate professional experience, and examination requirements, or the applicant received a master's degree in speech-language pathology or audiology awarded prior to January 1, 1993, completed a supervised clinical practicum, completed postgraduate professional experience, and passed an examination in speech-language pathology or audiology.
Interim Practice/Temporary Licensure
Clinical fellows must obtain a temporary license.
Continuing Education for Licensure Renewal
Applicants must complete 20 hours of documented and approved continuing education per each 2-year renewal period; applicants licensed in both speech-language pathology and audiology must complete 30 hours of documented and approved continuing education; excess hours may not be carried over to the subsequent renewal period.
Hearing Aid Dispensing
Audiologists must obtain an HAD license to dispense hearing aids.
Support Personnel
Speech-language pathology and audiology assistants must have a high school diploma and complete a training program conducted by a Kansas licensed speech-language pathologist or audiologist.
- Each supervisor (state licensee) shall directly supervise at least 10% of the assistant's client contact time.
- Each supervisor shall within 30 days of employing an assistant, submit written notice to the department of the assistant's name, employment location, and verification that the assistant meets the established qualifications.
- Certified audiometric technicians who hold a certificate of competency issued by the Kansas Department of Education and perform tympanometry screening are also considered assistants and must comply with the listed requirements.
Note
- The abbreviation SLP or SP stands for Speech Language Pathology or Pathologist, as appropriate, the abbreviation AUD stands for Audiology or Audiologist, as appropriate, and the abbreviation HAD stands for Hearing Aid Dealer.
- All jurisdictions require applicants to achieve a passing score on a national exam, and all but Nevada, North Dakota, and Virginia require applicants to complete a post graduate professional experience requirement.
- The term "clinical fellow," used throughout, means a person completing the post graduate professional experience requirement.
