Georgia Characteristics of State Teacher Requirements

The following information summarizes the requirements currently necessary to begin work in the public school system as an:

Audiologist or Speech-Language Pathologist

This information has been collected by researching individual state department of education regulations and policy documents, state administrative code provisions and by contacting each state department of education. Please be advised that regulations and policy may change at any time, so always check with your state department of education for the most up-to-date information.

Audiologist

Audiologist- Professional Certificate

An applicant shall be eligible for a Clear Renewable Certificate based on the submission of either a copy of a valid State of Georgia audiologist license issued by the Examining Boards Division of the Office of the Secretary of State; or a valid CCC in Audiology from ASHA.

Continuing Education Requirement

Six semester hours, 10 credits of Georgia Professional Learning Units, or 10 credits of continuing education units are required per five year period. Certificate holders may also renew a professional certificate with the submission of a valid state audiology license or valid CCC.

Non-renewable Professional Certification

Non-renewable Professional Certificates may be issued only to holders of an expired audiology certificate who meet special Georgia requirements.

Speech-Language Pathologist

Professional Certificate

An applicant shall be eligible for a Clear Renewable Certificate based upon:

  • The completion of a state program at the master's degree level or higher
    or
  • A program approved by ASHA
    or
  • Submission of a copy of a valid ASHA CCC
    or
  • Submission of a valid State of Georgia Speech-Language Pathology license issued by the Examining Boards Division of the Office of the Secretary of State

The appropriate content assessments and special Georgia requirements must also be completed.

Six semester hours, 10 credits of Georgia Professional Learning Units, or 10 credits of continuing education units are required per a five year period.

Non-renewable Professional Certification

If the applicant has satisfied all other requirements except that the highest degree held is a bachelor's degree, the certificate will be issued as Non-Renewable Professional Certificate to allow time for the completion of a state-approved master's degree program in speech-language pathology.

Support Personnel

A communication paraprofessional is an adjunct to the speech-language pathologist and assists with certain duties and tasks within the speech-language program. The communications paraprofessional is under the supervision of a certified or licensed SLP. The primary responsibility for the delivery of services, as indicated on the IEP, remains with the certified or licensed SLP. Students who receive services from the communication paraprofessional shall also receive services from the supervising SLP a percentage of the time designated in the IEP for speech and language services, but no less than one hour per month. All Georgia paraprofessionals (in school settings) must hold a valid state certificate issued by the Professional Standards Commission and must hold at least a high school diploma or GED equivalent.
