Alaska Characteristics of State Teacher Requirements

The following information summarizes the requirements currently necessary to begin work in the public school system as an:

Audiologist or Speech-Language Pathologist

The information below has been collected by researching individual state department of education regulations and policy documents, state administrative code provisions and by contacting each state department of education. Please be advised that regulations and policy may change at any time, so always check with your state department of education for the most up-to-date information.

Audiologist

Special Services Certificate Endorsed in Speech, Language, or Hearing for Audiologists

  1. Master's or higher degree with a major emphasis in audiology or a Certificate of Clinical Competence from ASHA
  2. Recommendation for endorsement by an institution with a program approved by NCATE or ASHA
  3. Six semester hours or nine quarter hours taken within the past five years
  4. Three semester hours of approved Alaska studies and three semester hours of multicultural education or cross-cultural communications

Temporary Certification

Applicants who do not meet the requirements of six semester hours of credit earned in the prior five years, but who meet other requirements, may be eligible to apply for a Temporary Certificate (valid for one year).

Provisional Certification

Applicants meeting all other requirements for certification, but who lack three semester hours in Alaska studies and three semester hours in multicultural education or cross-cultural education, may apply for a Provisional Certificate.

Continuing Education Requirement

Six semester hours of credit are required every five years. CEUs may be used for three of the six credits. 15 contact hours = one semester hour.

Speech-Language Pathologist

Special Services Certificate (Type C) Endorsed in Speech, Language or Hearing

  1. Master's or higher degree with a major emphasis in speech-language pathology, audiology, or speech-language and hearing science, or a Certificate of Clinical Competence from ASHA
  2. Recommendation for endorsement by an institution with a program approved by NCATE or ASHA
  3. Six semester hours or nine quarter hours taken within the past five years
  4. Three semester hours of approved Alaska studies and three semester hours of multicultural education or cross-cultural communications

Temporary Certification

Applicants who do not meet the requirements of six semester hours of credit earned in the prior five years, but who meet other requirements may be eligible to apply for a Temporary Certificate (valid for one year).

Provisional Certification

Applicants meeting all other requirements for certification, but who lack three semester hours in Alaska studies and three semester hours in multicultural education or cross-cultural education, may apply for a Provisional Certificate.

Continuing Education Requirement

Six semester hours of credit are required every five years. Up to three non-academic credits or continuing education units may be used to renew a regular 5-year certificate, and a minimum of three semester hours must be upper division or graduate credit. One continuing education unit may be awarded for a minimum of 15 contact hours.

Emergency Certification

If a school district superintendent is unable to hire a qualified related services specialist with a Type C certificate with an endorsement in speech-language pathology, the superintendent may request the commissioner to grant a waiver to hire a person who holds a Type A certificate (basic teaching certificate based on bachelor's degree), or holds at least a bachelor's degree in speech-language pathology to perform the duties of a speech-language pathologist. An application for a special education waiver must include:

  1. Proof that the person holds or is eligible to hold a Type A certificate or has completed at least a bachelor's degree in speech-language pathology
  2. Details of any actions taken by the district to recruit a person who holds a Type A teacher certificate with a special education endorsement
  3. Proof of full or conditional admission to an accredited teacher training program leading to a special education certification or endorsement
  4. Official transcripts and a letter from the institution training program stating that the applicant has completed a minimum of nine semester or 12 quarter hours of special education coursework and can complete the training program as described within three years

Support Personnel

Speech-language pathology assistants must be registered with the state licensure board in all settings (no exemption for school-based individuals). Individuals must have an associate of applied science degree in disabilities with a speech-language support emphasis or a bachelor's degree.
