New and revised hearing and swallowing diagnosis codes for the International Classification of Diseases, 9th Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) recommended by the ASHA Health Care Economics Committee will go into effect on October 1, 2007. For audiologists, the new and revised codes give a better level of specificity for conductive, neural, sensory and mixed hearing loss. Speech-language pathologists should find that the new dysphagia codes allow them to provide a diagnosis consistent with an instrumental assessment that identifies the locus of the dysphagia.
