ACTION ALERT: Urge Your Senators to Vote No on S.1955

(04/28/06)

Legislation that is currently moving through the Senate that would undermine state mandated protections for individuals who are in need of speech-language pathology (SLP) or audiology services.

The legislation, S. 1955, the Health Insurance Marketplace Modernization Act (HIMMA), was written to lower insurance costs for small businesses owners so they could offer health insurance to their employers.

However, the new health insurance plans created under this legislation would not be required to provide state mandated coverage of audiology and SLP services and devices, such as screening and early intervention for newborns with hearing loss.

Please take a moment and contact your Senators to urge them to vote against S. 1955. You can send the email within a few minutes by visiting ASHA’s Take Action Web site at http://takeaction.asha.org/asha2/issues/alert/?alertid=8713861&type=CO.

For further information, please contact Deborah Darcy, ASHA’s Director of Grassroots Advocacy, at grassroots@asha.org.

Thank you for your advocacy on this important legislation!
