State Education Advocacy Leaders (SEALs) from 22 states met at the Schools Conference last month in Phoenix. During the meeting they received updates from ASHA staff on No Child Left Behind, Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), ASHA's International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET) approval, salary supplement activities at the state and local levels, and personnel issues being addressed through ASHA's 2006 Focused Initiatives. Pennsylvania SEAL Ellen Estomin shared an update on the activities and issues that ASHA's School Finance Committee has been working on. Connie Breza, the West Virginia SEAL, also discussed the process leading to their successful salary supplement legislation this session. The roundtables topics selected for this meeting by SEALs were forming state advisory groups and response to intervention.
