ED Approves Two Growth Model Pilots

(05/25/06)

The U.S. Department of Education (ED) announced approval of two high-quality growth-based accountability models from Tennessee and North Carolina for the 2005-2006 school year. A growth model is a way for states that are already raising achievement and following the principles of the No Child Left Behind Act to strengthen accountability.

Tennessee has received full approval to implement their model this year. North Carolina is also permitted, provided its assessment system is fully approved by July 1. Six other states (Alaska, Arkansas, Arizona, Delaware, Florida, Oregon) that were peer reviewed have been asked to submit revised proposals by September 15, 2006 for consideration for the 2006-07 school year. The deadline for other states to submit new growth model proposals is November 1. The total limit for approved plans remains at 10.
