U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) Secretary Mike Leavitt announced that Leslie Norwalk will take over as Acting Administrator of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). Norwalk is currently the deputy director of the agency and has worked at CMS for the past five years. Earlier this month, CMS Administrator Mark McClellen announced his plan to leave the agency later this fall. Norwalk will assume her new position on October 15. It is expected that she will oversee CMS until a permanent replacement is named. Norwalk has been mentioned as a contender for CMS's top position along with other key agency staff.
