State Advisory Groups & Advocacy Leaders Meet in San Diego

(12/12/05)

In conjunction with ASHA's annual convention in San Diego, representatives of six states joined ASHA staff for a meeting at convention to discuss the ongoing development of state advisory groups within their state associations. The concept of state advisory groups emerged under ASHA's 2005 Focused Initiatives in order to address challenges that may emerge in the area of personnel qualifications in states. To date, six states have begun forming these groups. The groups consist of professionals in the field as well as consumers and related service providers.

State Education Advocacy Leaders (SEALs) from around the country also gathered to hear the latest on the impact of the reauthorized IDEA and highlights of the 2005 Focused Initiatives. Nancy Huffman, of ASHA's School Finance Committee, presented information on Medicaid billing and funding. Attendees also heard presentations and discussed the functioning of the SEAL within state associations as well as various issue areas that are being focused on within their states. For more information on state advisory groups and SEALs, please contact Eileen Crowe, ASHA's Director of State Association Relations, via e-mail at ecrowe@asha.org or by pone at 800-498-2071, ext. 4221.
