Kansas Issues New State Speech-Language Guidelines for Schools

(12/16/05)

The Kansas State Department of Education recently released the document, Speech-Language Guidelines for Schools. This document has three purposes: (1) to support a focus on improved results for children with disabilities, (2) to provide updated information on federal and state legislation pertaining to special education services for children with disabilities, and (3) to ensure speech-language pathologists have access to best practice information for speech-language pathology services for children in Kansas schools.

Kansas was one of the targeted states under the ASHA 2001-2004 Focused Initiatives for School-Based Services. ASHA staff served on the Guidelines Committee, and the document incorporates information about the ASHA workload model for determining caseloads.  The guide is available online at http://www.kansped.org/ksde/resources/speechguide.pdf (PDF format).  For more information, please contact Susan Karr, ASHA's Director of State Education Practices, via e-mail at skarr@asha.org  or by phone at 800-498-2071, ext. 4308
