Executive Director Update

August 18, 2006

This is another in a series of occasional ASHA Executive Director updates. These updates are intended to provide ASHA members with a more in-depth view of various National Office units, their key member services and the names and roles of ASHA staff in those units. Information about staff changes and ASHA National Office recognitions/awards is also included.

Many thanks to those of you who have provided feedback regarding the previous updates (posted on the ASHA Web site), or suggestions for future ED updates.

This update focuses on the  ASHA Continuing Education Unit.

ASHA's Continuing Education (CE) unit supports the mission of the ASHA Continuing Education Board (CEB) by:

  • Consulting with prospective providers to interpret standards and facilitate application submission;
  • Providing support to ASHA Approved CE Providers through individual consultations, dedicated CE Provider web resources, a one-on-one assigned staff provider manager, an annual workshop, and technical assistance in course planning/implementation/evaluation;
  • Reviewing Providers' courses against CEB standards, posting reviewed courses to a searchable, web-based database, and providing technical assistance to assist individuals in locating courses to fit their needs;
  • Developing innovative programs to increase the availability and accessibility of ASHA CEUs;
  • Assisting individuals in identifying learning needs, setting CE goals, implementing professional development plans, evaluating learning outcomes, and documenting CE participation, and
  • Recognizing individual CE accomplishments through a variety of mechanisms including CE Registry transcripts, the ASHA Award for Continuing Education (ACE), recognition letters to employers, acknowledgment on the ASHA Web site, recognition by the individual's state association, and recognition at national and state conventions.

There are over 473 ASHA Approved CE Providers. These organizations offer continuing education programs that:

  • Meet standards and requirements developed by the Continuing Education Board (CEB) to ensure quality and relevant learning experiences, and
  • Provide audiologists and speech-language pathologists the opportunity to earn ASHA Continuing Education Units (CEUs).

ASHA members may use ASHA's CourSearch to find courses that meet their learning needs and are offered for ASHA CEUs.

The ASHA CE Registry maintains a permanent cumulative record of ASHA CEUs earned by individuals. CE courses offered by ASHA Approved CE Providers for ASHA CEUs and registered with the ASHA CE Registry are recognized by all state regulatory agencies that mandate CE for renewal of licensure.

Learn & Earn ASHA CEUs includes six professional development options:

Each of these Learn and Earn options allows busy professionals the opportunity to earn ASHA CEUs that meet state and national professional development requirements by participating in programs geared to fit easily within their schedule and to support professional learning needs.

During the past 12 months the ASHA CE Unit has:

  • Achieved IACET Licensed Standards User status
  • Launched Learn & Earn Book Clubs
  • Maintained CE Registry cumulative transcripts for more than 155,000 individuals
  • Issued more than 7,000 CE Registry transcripts
  • Reviewed and registered more than 12,000 courses for ASHA CEUs
  • Issued more than 3,400 Awards for Continuing Education (ACE)
  • Overseen 250 Learn & Earn courses
  • Awarded over 109,000 ASHA CEUs
