This is the ninth in a series of occasional ASHA Executive Director updates. These updates are intended to provide ASHA members a more in-depth view of various National Office units, their key member services and the names and roles of ASHA staff in those units. Information about staff changes and ASHA National Office recognitions/awards is also included.
Many thanks to those of you who have provided feedback regarding the previous updates, or suggestions for future ED updates.
This update focuses on the ASHA Ethical Issues Unit
The Ethical Issues Unit assists the Association in establishing and supporting the ethical foundation for the professional practice of audiology and speech-language pathology, and research and scholarly activities. The Ethical Issues Unit is committed to assist members as they strive to attain the highest level of competence, improve the practice of the professions, and to exemplify the ideals of service to the public.
The Ethical Issues Unit:
- provides direct ethics guidance, information, and advice to individuals who contact the National Office
- provides information and advice to the association's leadership and other volunteers regarding ethical issues related to their responsibilities
- provides guidance to university programs in their efforts to infuse ethics and critical thinking skills into their academic and clinical core curricula
- provides enhanced web-based ethics resources
- provides administrative support to the Board of Ethics in its ethics enforcement activities and adjudication of complaints
- tracks trends of recurring and emerging ethical issues to assist the Board of Ethics and the association in planning relevant and timely ethics education activities
- serves as a resource in ASHA's efforts to successfully meet the projected outcomes of the association's 2005-2007 Strategic Plan
- serves as a resource for ethics presentations at university training programs and state/national/international associations
- publishes ethics articles in professional journals
- provides assistance to other National Office units when issues arise in their work that have an ethics component or where ethical guidance is requested

National Office Staff Update
The following individuals are new to the ASHA Staff:

The following staff have changed positions within ASHA:
- Nellie Chick - Director, Convention Special Projects (formerly Registration Manager, Conventions and Meetings)
- Lauren Ero - Manager, CE Provider Services (formerly Program Manager, Academic Affairs).
- Gina Olwoch - Director, Convention Technology & Special Events (formerly Director, Convention Special Projects)
- Florence Parent - Manager of CE Provider Records (formerly Action Center Specialist).
The following individuals have left ASHA to pursue other opportunities:

Recent ASHA National Office/Staff Awards:
- ASHA staff were recipients of the following awards from the Society of National Association Publications (SNAP):
- At the April 2005 meeting of the Council of Academic Programs in Communication Sciences & Disorders, the following ASHA staff were recognized:
- Georgia McMann, ASHA's Director of Certification Administration, was the recipient of the Council's Distinguished Service Award for her role as the ex-officio to the Council For Clinical Certification (CFCC). It was noted that Georgia has been instrumental in guiding the CFCC through its certification standards development and implementation and assisting academic programs in adjusting to new, outcomes-based certification standards.
- Patti Tice, ASHA's Director of Credentialing, was the recipient of the Council's Distinguished Service Award for her role as the ex-officio to the Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA). It was noted that Patti has been instrumental in guiding the CAA through its accreditation standards development and implementation and assisting academic programs in adjusting to new, outcomes-based accreditation standards.
- The ASHA National Office was awarded the Maryland Work-Life Alliance - 2004 - 2005 Workplace Excellence Seal of Approval.
- The ASHA National Office was recognized at Montgomery County's 19th Annual Transportation Awards Ceremony for the contributions of key business leaders, outstanding employers and employees, and others who promote the use of transit, carpooling and other commuting alternatives to address the transportation challenges of Montgomery County.
- The ASHA National Office was recognized at the Annual Montgomery County Recycling Awareness Awards Ceremony, for outstanding waste reduction and recycling efforts during 2004
