Executive Director Update

May 13, 2008

This is another in a series of occasional ASHA Executive Director updates. These updates are intended to provide ASHA members with a more in-depth view of various National Office units, their key member services and the names and roles of ASHA staff in those units. Information about staff changes and ASHA National Office recognitions/awards is also included.

Many thanks to those of you who have provided feedback regarding the previous updates (posted on the ASHA Web site), or suggestions for future ED updates.

This update focuses on ASHA's Strategic Pathway to Excellence.

In January 2008, the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association implemented its new strategic plan, ASHA's Strategic Pathway to Excellence (Pathway). The Pathway was developed during 2007 based on input provided by volunteer leaders, ASHA members, and National Office staff.

As part of the Pathway, a new Vision and Mission Statement was approved—

Vision Statement

ASHA: Making effective communication, a human right, accessible and achievable for all.

Mission Statement

ASHA: Empowering and supporting speech-language pathologists, audiologists, and speech, language, and hearing scientists by:

    • Advocating on behalf of persons with communication and related disorders
    • Advancing communication science
    • Promoting effective human communication

The Vision and Mission Statement serve as the basis for providing ASHA's programs and services.

The Pathway also includes ASHA's guiding principles or Core Values.

ASHA's Core Values guide us in achieving our Vision, Mission, and our Strategic Objectives. They form the foundation on which ASHA performs its work.

Core Values: Excellence, Integrity, Diversity, Commitment, Responsive, Member-centric, Research-based

To focus ASHA's work, four Strategic Themes were identified. These "Pillars of Excellence" are the main focus areas of the Association's strategy and the key areas in which the Association must excel in order to achieve its Vision and Mission, and strategy.

ASHA's Strategic Themes/Pillars of Excellence and Associated Desired Strategic Result:

  • Two Professions, One Discipline

Strategic Result: ASHA will be the Association of choice for professionals in human communication sciences and disorders. The relationship among the professions and the discipline will be apparent in ASHA's programs, products and services.

  • Scientifically Based Professional Practices

Strategic Result: ASHA strengthens its leadership in the generation, dissemination, and translation of research into the clinical practice of Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology.

  • Advocacy

Strategic Result: ASHA's organizational and grass-roots advocacy efforts lead to significant change in the promotion and advancement of the interests of the professionals in human communication and those we serve.

  • The Member Experience

Strategic Result: The value of ASHA membership will be apparent and enhanced member satisfaction will be the rationale for member retention.

To achieve the Strategic Results associated with the Pillars of Excellence, sixteen Strategic Objectives were identified. Strategic Objectives define the Association's strategic intent. Strategic Objectives are action-oriented statements of what must be done to be successful.

Following are the ASHA Strategic Objectives:

  • Enhance Member Satisfaction
  • Enhance Effectiveness Across Professions and Settings
  • Increase Research Commitment
  • Increase the Number, Diversity, and Cultural Competence of the Membership
  • Increase Grassroots Advocacy by Members, Consumers, and Stakeholders
  • Increase Active Involvement of Members
  • Enhance Financial Stewardship
  • Increase Reimbursement and Funding
  • Expand Revenue Streams
  • Improve the Science Base
  • Improve External Communication
  • Improve Data Collection and Decision-Making
  • Improve Targeted Customization of Programs, Products, and Services
  • Increase Knowledge and Internal Communication
