This is another in a series of occasional ASHA Executive Director updates. These updates are intended to provide ASHA members with a more in-depth view of various National Office units, their key member services and the names and roles of ASHA staff in those units. Information about staff changes and ASHA National Office recognitions/awards is also included.
Many thanks to those of you who have provided feedback regarding the previous updates, or suggestions for future ED updates.
This update focuses on the ASHA Academic Affairs Unit.
The Academic Affairs Program provides leadership on behalf of ASHA in matters pertaining to the educational preparation of audiologists, speech-language pathologists, and speech, language and hearing scientists. These matters include identifying relevant issues, forecasting needs and trends, recommending policies, and initiating and executing appropriate action to advance education in the professions.
The Academic Affairs Unit:
Develops and Disseminates Information on Higher Education and CSD
- Forecasts trends in higher education, disseminates information and materials related to academic issues, and develops guidelines for curriculum content
- Identifies new models of academic and clinical education and new models for curriculum delivery
- Contributes to the development and maintenance of online directories of academic programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD)
Develops Resources to Support Faculty and Students
- Develops strategies for the recruitment and retention of doctoral students and faculty
- Develops resources that support academic and clinical faculty in their career development and preparation of future professionals
- Develops resources that support students and professionals in their pursuit of undergraduate studies through advanced degrees within the discipline
Provides Consultation to External Groups and ASHA National Office Units
- Serves as ASHA's liaison to the Educational Testing Service (ETS), the Council of Academic Programs in Communication Sciences and Disorders (CAPCSD) and other pertinent public and private agencies
- Consults with and provides technical assistance to faculty, students, professionals, leadership, and other organizations and professions about issues in higher education
- Provides consultation and support to units within the ASHA National Office on higher education matters and education in Communication Sciences and Disorders
Academic Affairs' Major Priorities and Activities for 2006 include:
- Oversight of ASHA's Focused Initiative (FI): PhD Shortage in Higher Education
- Team leadership and team participation for selected strategies within the ASHA Strategic Plan, Focused Initiatives: Personnel Issues and Evidence Based Practice.
- Consultation on the development and implementation of the Higher Education Data System—GradGuide and Doctoral Guide Survey Instruments
- Continued development of the Faculty, Researchers, and PhD Students Web site
- Bimonthly publication of the Access Academics & Research e-Newsletter in conjunction with Scientific Programs and Research Development
- Maintain ASHA's current online Curriculum Resources in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology
- Administration of the 2006 Students Preparing for Academic and Research Careers (SPARC) competition
- Develop and launch an online mentoring portal for new faculty and PhD students
- Co-Planning Convention events (Graduate School Fair, Researcher-Academic Town Meeting)
- Consultation on Joint Committee projects with the CAPCSD (e.g., PhD Shortage, PhD Summer Institute, Student Recruitment)
- Continued consultation with ETS and the National Advisory Committees and item-writing committees toward the development of the Praxis exams in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology
- Evaluation of the Academic Affairs Program as required by the Legislative Council
- Support the work of the Council for Clinical Specialty Recognition (CCSR)
