ISSUE E: Increased international exchange of professional knowledge, information, and education related to ethics, clinical practice, and supervision/clinical education in communication sciences and disorders will require a variety of dissemination, communication, educational, and professional practice delivery systems.
1st Quarter Highlights
- Coverage of ASHA's Popular Technology and Hearing Loss campaign has been gone global with Canadian, British, French, German, Australian and other foreign media outlets have printed stories. The campaign also has been promoted on Telemundo, a major Hispanic TV network.
- Newly developed brochures promoting the benefits of joining a special interest division are disseminated at conferences and Convention. Web Events hosted by the Special Interest Divisions also promote the value of Division affiliation and discounts on select ASHA products demonstrate the value-added benefits of belonging to the Divisions. Most special interest divisions provide CEUs with their publication Perspectives and/or their conferences/workshops.
- The State Advocacy unit tracks proposed legislation and regulations using a key word search of a proprietary database. A bill in Georgia that permits telepractice under a full state license is currently being monitored.
- Attended the 2006 Telehealth Leadership Conference.
- Negotiations for a NOMS based demonstration project are ongoing with the provincial health ministry in Prince Edward's Island, Canada.
- Two Special Interest Divisions (Voice and Fluency) contributed to The ASHA Leader issues about service delivery internationally.
- A list of international events related to speech-language pathology and audiology can be accessed on the ASHA Web site.
- Contacted professionals in the Philippines and Australia regarding exchange of professional information in communication sciences and disorders.
- Staff attended the Campbell Collaboration Colloquium that focused on systematic reviews of high-quality evidence on the effects of interventions and how systematic reviews may be used in policy and program settings.
- A resource list of ASHA members, service providers, and organizations associated with international service delivery has been developed.
- Articles published in The ASHA Leader: "Grant Program for Projects on Multicultural Activities;" "Speech and Language Treatment in East Africa;" "Thousands of Miles From Home—Speech-Language Pathology Students in Jerusalem;" and "Signs From the Desert—New Language Sheds Light on Linguistic Evolution."
