For each of the 2007 Focused Initiatives, a work plan that includes the strategies to be completed in 2007 was developed. During the 2nd quarter of the year, the strategy implementation teams initiated activities necessary to complete the strategies by the dates indicated. The following report highlights some of the actions that were initiated during the 2nd quarter and includes information on the status of all strategies included in the work plan at the end of the 2nd quarter. 2nd Quarter Highlights
- The 2007 Health Care Survey on shortages, attrition, and work conditions has been fielded and results are currently being analyzed.
- Audiology Practices and the Surveys and Information Team has developed a survey for the purpose of obtaining information from educational audiologists about the type of positions they are currently holding (part-time, full-time, contractual, salaried), their perceptions regarding shortages and the reasons for shortages in their state.
- An article was written for the Division on Administration and Supervision (Div 11) Perspectives newsletter to promote volunteering for supervision of practicum students.
Round table discussions were held at the ASHA State Policy Workshop to share resources for recruitment/retention of healthcare personnel and offer a customized health care Web page for states.
- Grants have been awarded to ten state associations to meet challenges related to reducing personnel qualifications in their state. States awarded grants were Alabama, Texas, Indiana, New York, Oregon, West Virginia, Vermont, Alaska, Washington, and Ohio.
- Sessions at the ASHA State Policy Workshop provided state leaders with information on how to use salary supplements to recruit and retain qualified personnel in schools and Medicaid reimbursement to retain qualified personnel.
- The six members of the cadre of expert member consultants established to help mobilize state associations in providing information and technical assistance on how to deal with efforts to reduce personnel qualifications in the states, including providing on-site assistance and testimony participated in two Web enhanced trainings that focused on the data that ASHA has compiled on personnel shortages, successful strategies that have been utilized across the country to recruit and retain personnel, formulation of state action plans, and facilitating meetings of stakeholders and decision makers.
- A poster session on "Addressing Personnel Shortages in School Settings: Strategies that Work" was held at the ASHA Schools Conference.
- State speech-language-hearing associations have been invited to participate in a grassroots advocacy training program video conference to assist states in addressing the legislative and regulatory challenges surrounding the issue of the use of qualified personnel and the maintenance of standards.
