Abstract: Approve the statement, Roles of Speech-Language Pathologists in the Identification, Diagnosis, and Treatment of Individuals With Cognitive-Communication Disorders: Position Statement.
RESOLVED, That the statement Roles of Speech-Language Pathologists in the Identification, Diagnosis, and Treatment of Individuals With Cognitive-Communication Disorders: Position Statement be approved by ASHA; and further
RESOLVED, That Roles of Speech-Language Pathologists in the Identification, Diagnosis, and Treatment of Individuals With Cognitive-Communication Disorders: Position Statement be published in the supplement of The ASHA Leader, be posted on the ASHA professional Web site, be made available upon request from the ASHA Action Center, be included in the next revision of the ASHA Desk Reference, and that the availability of the position statement be announced in The ASHA Leader.
Rationale: This position statement was prepared by the ASHA-Special Interest Division 1 (Language Learning and Education) and ASHA-Special Interest Division 2 (Neurophysiology and Neurogenic Speech and Language Disorders) Working Group on Cognitive-Communication Disorders. Members of the group are Lynn M. Maher (chair), Leora Cherney, Mary Kennedy, Ron Gillam, Dava Waltzman, Mark Ylvisaker, and Diane Paul-Brown (ex officio). Alex F. Johnson (2000–2002) and Celia Hooper (2003–2005), ASHA vice presidents for professional practices in speech-language pathology, served as monitoring officers for this working group. The position statement defines the roles of speech-language pathologists in the evaluation and management of individuals with communication disorders associated with cognitive impairments. A companion document clarifies the knowledge and skills needed for provision of these services.
