Abstract: Approve the document entitled “Knowledge and Skills in Business Practices Needed by Speech-Language Pathologists in Health Care Settings”

RESOLVED, That the document entitled “Knowledge and Skills in Business Practices Needed by Speech-Language Pathologists in Health Care Settings” be approved as ASHA policy; and further

RESOLVED, That “Knowledge and Skills in Business Practices Needed by Speech-Language Pathologists in Health Care Settings” be published in the next annual supplement to The ASHA Leader and that it be posted on the professional Web site, be made available upon request from the ASHA Action Center, and be included in the next revision of the ASHA Desk Reference.

RATIONALE:   This document represents the work of the Ad Hoc Committee on Business Practices for Speech-Language Pathologists in Health Care Settings, which was charged to develop a knowledge and skills practice policy document delineating the areas of business practice in which SLPs must be knowledgeable and skilled to provide services effectively in a health care setting. The need for this document stems from recent changes in reimbursement policies that resulted in dramatic shifts in staffing and service delivery in health care settings. SLPs changing jobs to new employment in a health care setting or entering the profession as Clinical Fellows face the challenge of a steep learning curve in the nonclinical aspects of providing service (e.g., reimbursement, documentation, technology).  The purpose of this document is to assist SLPs entering the health care setting in identifying the expectations of the healthcare environment so that they can seek appropriate information, resources, and mentoring.  The document may also be used by graduate programs and clinical supervisors to teach and develop competencies in business practices.

OUTCOME(S):   This policy document provides a basis for members to identify the knowledge and skills in business practices that are needed by SLPs in health care settings, which are currently not addressed in other ASHA documents.

BUDGET IMPACT:   Funds in the amount of $4450 for the publication and dissemination of this knowledge and skills document are already included in ASHA’s operating budget.

PROGRAMMATIC IMPACT: Approval of this document will add a new ASHA practice policy that addresses knowledge and skills in business practices needed by SLPs in health care settings.

If this resolution is not passed, ASHA will not have the benefit of an approved policy document for clinicians, as well as graduate programs and supervisors, about the knowledge and skills needed to practice in these settings.
