Abstract: Provide complimentary convention registration to student presenters
RESOLVED, That ASHA provide complimentary convention registration to NSSLHA members whose presentations are selected for inclusion in ASHA’s annual convention program; and further
RESOLVED, That in the case of joint student authorship of a presentation, only one complimentary registration per presentation be provided; and further
RESOLVED, That in the case of joint authorship including students and non-students of a presentation, one complimentary registration be provided to a student only if he or she is identified as the lead author; and further
RESOLVED, That this initiative be for the convention years 2002 – 2004, after which it shall be evaluated.
RATIONALE: It is in ASHA’s interest to encourage students to become involved in the Association, initially through being a member of the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA), and to make presentations of scientific and professional issues in human communication and its disorders at ASHA's annual convention. Providing complimentary convention registration to students who are authors of educational presentations selected for inclusion in ASHA’s annual convention program will send a message that ASHA welcomes the contributions of students; it will foster a positive relationship between these students and ASHA; and it will stimulate their continued involvement in Association activities.
OUTCOME(S): More students will be encouraged to join NSSLHA and submit convention proposals, and more students may attend the convention. In addition, while the proportion of accepted convention presentations from professionals needs to be maintained, more student submissions may stimulate a greater number of submissions from professionals.
BUDGET IMPACT: Over the last three years, ASHA had an average of 441 student presenters (1998 – 510; 1999 – 474; 2000 – 339). At the 2001 NSSLHA and doctoral student pre-registration rate ($165), the waiver of fees for 441 student presenters would represent $72,765 in foregone revenue. If over 400 student presentations are accepted that entitle the authors to complementary registration, additional temporary staff may be required to handle the additional paperwork.
PROGRAMMATIC IMPACT: The convention could experience increased attendance and more varied and competitive educational offerings if more students participated. ASHA’s recognized support of membership in NSSLHA and the valuable contribution of students in scientific inquiry would be strengthened. It is also possible that this incentive will result in more students joining NSSLHA and ultimately becoming members of ASHA.
