Music, entertainment, and excitement await you as we kick off the ASHA Convention at the Opening General Session. We have many surprises in store to welcome you to Chicago—including a Broadway musical treat you won’t want to miss!
The Opening Session will feature ASHA President Glenda Ochsner’s presidential address as well as welcoming remarks from Convention Program Co-Chairs Ken Bleile and Michael Dennis. ASHA members and their dedication to volunteerism will be highlighted.
We are honored to have as our keynote speaker world-renowned neurosurgeon Dr. Benjamin Carson.
Carson has been Director of the Division of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Maryland since 1984. He is professor of neurosurgery, plastic surgery, oncology, and pediatrics. He is also the Co-Director of the Johns Hopkins Craniofacial Center. His practice includes traumatic brain injuries, brain and spinal cord tumors, achondroplasia, neurological and congenital disorders, craniosynostosis, epilepsy, and trigeminal neuralgia. This work includes active research programs.
As a child, Carson dreamed of becoming a physician. Growing up in a single parent home with dire poverty, poor grades, a horrible temper, and low self-esteem appeared to preclude the realization of that dream. But, through the discipline and support of his mother Sonya, Dr. Carson beat the odds to become perhaps the world’s best-known neurosurgeon.
Dr. Carson has written more than 90 neurosurgical publications. He has been awarded 24 honorary degrees and dozens of national citations of merit. He is the author of three best selling books, Gifted Hands, Think Big, and The Big Picture.
Carson has spent a lifetime working to improve the lives of children—not only through his surgical abilities, but also through his spirit of volunteerism and philanthropy. With his wife, Candy, Carson is the founder of the Ben Carson Lifetime Scholars, a nonprofit organization that trains high school students for a lifetime of scholarship. Carson also founded the Carson Scholars program, a nonprofit organization created to help younger children stay competitive in science, math, and technology, and to balance academic achievement with the high esteem our society gives to sports and entertainment. Through these programs, Carson has helped innumerable children reach their full potential. His message of hope and dedication to children will motivate and inspire you. Be sure to schedule time for this exciting program!
