Expectations for Graduate Programs and Certification Applicants

Related to Implementation of New Certification Standards in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology

Joint Statement by
Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology and
Council For Clinical Certification in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology

(June 6, 2003)

Requirements for Graduate Programs

When the Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) reviews a graduate program for the purpose of accreditation, reaccreditation, or Candidacy, the review process will ensure that the program adheres to the following:

1. Maintains a curriculum that addresses the knowledge and skill areas delineated in the appropriate ASHA Standards for the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Audiology or Standards for the Certificate of Clinical Competence in Speech-Language Pathology (certification standards).

2. Has established written program goals that are tied to its mission and that identify broad student learning outcomes for the knowledge and skill areas identified in the appropriate certification standards. The program goals should encompass the breadth of knowledge and skills and be consistent with the program’s specific mission. The program’s student learning outcomes should be on a more general level than course- or practicum-specific goals.

3. Has developed and incorporates formative and summative assessment instruments/methods capable of determining whether the student has achieved the knowledge and skills.

4. Has developed and uses a recording system capable of effectively documenting a student’s acquisition of the knowledge and skills.

5. Has drawn information from multiple sources to determine that the student learning outcomes selected are appropriate for entry-level clinicians in audiology or speech-language pathology.

6. Demonstrates that data are gathered from the assessment of student performance and that the data collected are used to improve the program.

Requirements for Certification Applicants

1. Individuals who have initiated and completed their graduate education at a program accredited by ASHA’s Council on Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) and who apply within 3 years of receiving their graduate degree are considered to be "pass-through" applicants and, as such, will be required to submit the first page and the "verification by program director" page of the certification application. It can be assumed that these students meet the academic and practicum requirements for ASHA certification.

2. As is the current process, all other applicants will be considered "non-pass-through" applicants and be required to submit the entire, completed application form for certification. The revised application form to be used by individuals applying under the new certification standards will include the current Knowledge and Skills Acquisition (KASA) document, which summarizes acquisition of knowledge and skills.

3. In addition to submission of either the shortened application for pass-through applicants or the complete application for non-pass-through applicants, individuals desiring ASHA certification will be required to submit official graduate transcripts, application fees, and related dues.

4. An applicant for certification must achieve a passing score on the appropriate Praxis examination and the score report must be submitted to ASHA from the Educational Testing Service (ETS).

5. For applicants in speech-language pathology, a Speech-Language Pathology Clinical Fellowship (SLPCF) must be completed and reported to the ASHA National Office.
