Frequently Asked Questions

How many people can be in one ASHA BookTalk group?
ASHA BookTalk is designed for four to ten participants. They can be people you work with, people you know from other classes, or other speech-language pathologists or audiologists in your area.

Who can be a part of ASHA BookTalk?
ASHA members should act as the group's Coordinator and register the group for ASHA BookTalk. Any interested speech-language pathologists or audiologists who are either ASHA members or have a Master's degree or greater can be a part of ASHA BookTalk.

How much does ASHA BookTalk cost?
It's only $35 for ASHA members. Non-members are $10 extra.

How many ASHA Continuing Education Units (ASHA CEUs) can I earn?
You can earn up to 1.2 ASHA CEUs per book, based on the number of meetings you have, and the length of each meeting. 1-hour meetings earn .1 ASHA CEUs and 2-hour meetings earn .2 ASHA CEUs.

Does our group get credit for our organizational meeting?
ASHA CEUs are only issued for ASHA BookTalk meetings where your group discusses assigned readings.

"One of the best aspects of ASHA BookTalk was discussing ways to apply ideas from the book we read to our clinical practice settings."

Tanya A., SLP,  MA

Can I choose my own book?
Yes! Pick a book that is most relevant to you and the people in your group.

How long is each ASHA BookTalk meeting?
You choose what length of time works best for you. Each meeting can be 60 minutes or 120 minutes. 60-minute meetings earn .1 ASHA CEUs and 120-minute meetings receive .2 ASHA CEUs.

Does our group have to read the whole book?
No. ASHA BookTalk is totally customizable by you. Read only the chapters of a book that are relevant to your group. Or, read a complete book to further your knowledge on a topic. Your group decides.

Can I miss an ASHA BookTalk meeting?
You can miss one meeting per book and still receive ASHA CEUs. However, you will only get credit for the meetings you attend. If you miss more than one meeting, you may continue to attend, but you will not receive any credit for participating in that ASHA BookTalk group.

Can our group combine many ASHA BookTalk meetings into one long day?
Since ASHA BookTalk is designed to maximize your learning, your group must hold at least 3 separate 1-hour meetings (maximum 12 hours) during a 3- to 6-month period. Regular meetings over a period of time help to ensure that you are able to retain what you've read.

How many months do we read the same book?
Your group has 3 to 6 months to read and hold meetings to discuss the book you have selected. You can customize the rate of reading based on your group's individual needs.

How long after we finish one book can we start another?
You can start one book right after finishing another. Just be sure to register your next book about 30 days before you intend to have the first group meeting for that book.

How can I get a record of my ASHA BookTalk CEUs?
All ASHA CEUs earned through ASHA Continuing Education can be recorded on your ASHA CE Registry transcript. Your transcript can then be sent to your employer (or licensing board, etc.) upon your request. This is all done through the ASHA CE Registry.
