Responsible for covering key aspects of ASHA and issues in its field with the aim of determining opportunities in keeping with ASHA priorities that can be developed and acted upon by the ASHA public relations team; in addition, responsible for covering and cultivating a certain type of media outlet (i.e. newspaper, magazine, electronic, etc.) that can be used to disseminate ASHA news; lastly, offers PR expertise, resources, and relevant support to the ASHA national office, volunteer leadership, and constituents, and acts as a key member of the overall PR team.
Responsibilities
- Cover and cultivate an assigned subject beat of top issues related to ASHA's field, as well as key aspects of ASHA's operations, programs, activities, and events
- Cover and cultivate an assigned beat made up of a certain type of news outlets
- Share/support fellow managers when/should they need to draw on their beat information/expertise, or require their help with coverage
- Lend PR expertise/support to other ASHA Departments and ASHA senior leadership, volunteer leaders, members, and other constituents as needed
- Demonstrate leadership/initiative/planning with regard to recognizing appropriate PR opportunities that further ASHA priorities, and developing effective ways to act upon them
- Represent PR unit before key internal and external audiences, prepared to make compelling, interesting, and appropriate verbal and visual presentations
- Recruit and oversee a discreet number of external vendors
- Plan and manage a discreet amount of annual PR budget
Qualifications
Knowledge typically acquired through:
- B.A./B.S. degree in Journalism, Communications, or related field
- Minimum of five years of PR or PR-related experience, preferably in the non-profit/association fields
Scope and depth of technical skills/knowledge:
- Writes well/quickly/accurately for a wide variety of audiences and can quickly and effectively adapt writing skills to a wide range of audiences/formats that is most relevant to the assignment at hand; has a keen and ready sense for adapting PR outreach to a given audience
- Has first hand experience and understanding of the basics of how the media works
- Tracks the news as a matter of course and has a keen sense and feel for what news is
- Has demonstrated and active interest in the profession of public relations and a strong record of pursuing professional development
- A strong record of conducting successful media relations
- Skilled with basic PR formats—press release, advisory kit, tip sheets, op eds, testimony, position statements, etc; knows how to plan and conduct PR functions, for example, interviews, briefings, press conferences, panels, polls, focus groups
- Can strategize PR efforts, especially with regard to goal setting, choice of messaging and message development, packaging, tools, issue/budget impact, and overall worth
- Comfortable and effective verbally in PR contexts such as speaking with media, speaking before groups, and making PR-related presentations
- Knows how to interview for information
- Computer/technologically literate
- Has at the least a superficial knowledge of a range of media tools, print and electronic
- Can manage relationships with vendors effectively and cost-consciously
