Perspectives is going GREEN to save some GREEN in 2008!

In 2008, Special Interest Division member publications, Perspectives, will be published online only. The Divisions are going to this new format:

  • To save some GREEN. Increases in content and frequency of publication coupled with increasing postage costs have put a strain on Division budgets. Publishing online only will free up resources that can be allocated to other Division programs and member benefits.
  • To be more GREEN. Online publishing is a positive step environmentally; it saves resources (paper, energy) associated with publishing hardcopy.
  • To respond to affiliates' interests in accessing content online.
  • To provide new benefits (e.g., archived issues).

2008 Topics for Division 2 Perspectives

Look for these exciting topics in Division 2's peer-reviewed Perspectives this year!

  • April: Case Studies of Degenerative Disorders (4 cases: 2 adult, 2 child)
  • June: Right Hemisphere Impairment (2 adult, 1 child)
  • October: Complimentary and Alternative Approaches (hyperbaric, hypnosis, acupuncture, etc., pharmacological, new PhD issues)
  • December: TBI Sequelae (carbon monoxide/anoxia, blast injuries, household exposures – mold, lead, chemicals)

Encouraging Research

Division 2 and the ASHA Research unit of the National Office sponsored the ASHA Convention Registration Award for Recent Graduates.

Purpose: To promote the dissemination of research findings in Neurogenic Communication Disorders by offering a complimentary ASHA Convention registration to six NSSLHA members and six ASHA members who are recent master's or doctoral graduates and whose proposal was accepted for presentation at the Convention.

Grant Opportunities

Division 2 Offers Grant Supplement

Division 2 is offering a $1,500 grant in honor of our colleague Carol Frattali. The funding is designed to supplement the ASHA Foundation Research Grant for New Investigators. New Investigators submitting proposals in Neurogenic Communication Disorders to the Foundation are strongly encouraged to request the additional funds. Applications are available online.

The application process is short and easy; the one-page document is included with the Foundation documents. The additional funding can be used but is not limited to testing additional subjects, buying more tests and equipment, or paying a research assistant.

Evidence-Based Practice

Best Practice in Health Care

Division 2 sponsored a life event on Best Practice in Health Care in February 2006. You can access the archived content online. [ASHA members only] The forum includes a list of references on the topic, including articles accessible online.

ANCDS Project

Division 2 has supported the work of the Academy of Neurologic Communication Disorders and Sciences in their preparation of evidence-based practice documents.

ANCDS initiated a project that examines research support for procedures used to treat neurologic communication disorders. The goal is to improve the quality of care by helping practicing clinicians make decisions based on "guidelines" supported by research evidence. This will be done primarily through extensive literature reviews. A second outcome of this project will be to identify areas in which additional research is needed. See a progress report (Affiliates only).

Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality has posted several evidence-based reviews of disorders and diseases relevant to clients served by Division 2 affiliates.

Vision

To facilitate the highest level of professional practice provided to individuals with neurogenic communication disorders.

Mission

To be the voice within ASHA that will promote, interpret, and disseminate information that is relevant to neurogenic communication disorders and to serve as a conduit for the exchange of information and ideas among division affiliates.
