Advocacy Common Core State Standards
Common Core State Standards
With the adoption and implementation of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) speech-language pathologists need to advocate for their roles and responsibilities and for the needs of the students with communication disorders who they serve. SLPs can take on a variety of roles in relation to the Common Core—they may serve as members of Response to Intervention (RTI) teams, collaborate with teachers and other education professionals in the academic setting, and assume leadership in explaining and clarifying language issues tied to the standards. In all of these capacities, and in serving the needs of students in the school setting, advocacy is essential. ASHA has several resources to assist the school-based SLP in advocating for local, state, and federal resources and policies.
