The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA)

Coordinating Care More Effectively

The law seeks to create a health care system in which a person's care is coordinated across settings and across episodes of care to improve patient outcomes and reduce costs. Audiologists and speech-language pathologists (SLPs) should educate themselves about new coordinated care models and be prepared to show that they can provide valuable services as integral members of the health care team in these models.

The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation (CMMI), created by the ACA, is the acting agent to manage the initiatives and demonstrations that encourage better health, quality care, and lower costs.
