Description: This is a review of randomized studies comparing the effects of hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) and treatment without HBOT on idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSHL) and/or tinnitus.
Question(s) Addressed:
- Does the administration of hyperbaric oxygen to people with idiopathic sensorineural hearing loss (whether early or late presentation) result in an increase in the proportion attaining a useful improvement in hearing?
- Does the administration of hyperbaric oxygen to people with tinnitus (whether early or late presentation) result in an increase in the proportion experiencing a useful reduction in tinnitus?
Population: Adults with acute onset of sensorineural hearing loss and/or tinnitus
Intervention/Assessment: Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT)

Conclusions:
This review supports the use of HBOT as an effective treatment for improving hearing loss in the early presentation of ISSHL. Effects of HBOT for the treatment of tinnitus cannot be determined from this review. Results of this review should be considered with caution secondary reduced methodological quality of included studies (Abstract p. 2).
