This guideline provides recommendations for the first level management of illness in young children. The intended audiences are doctors, senior nurses, and other senior health workers in developing countries.

- Swallowing/Feeding - Babies with low birth weight or cleft palate may exhibit feeding difficulties. The guideline recommends assessment and ongoing monitoring of feeding and growth.
- Speech - Babies with cleft palate may have difficulties with speech development. Follow up post-surgery is recommended to monitor speech development.
- Hearing - Babies with cleft palate may exhibit middle-ear infections. The guideline recommends monitoring of hearing post-surgery.
