Description:
This evidence-based guideline provides general recommendations for the practice of speech-language pathology across clinical specialty and client population.
Recommendations:
- General Recommendations
- The clinician should always take a case history. The case history should consider communication, eating and drinking, home and family, social, educational, employment, and medical/physical conditions.
- Assessment should take into account the World Health Organization (WHO) classification system with consideration for the body function and structures, individual's activity and participation, and contextual factors.
- Assessment should examine skills in all languages and should be matched to the individual's dialect and religious profile
- Assessment should be conducted across a variety of social settings and should consider a holistic view of the individual's communication.
- Differential diagnoses should be formed
- The clinician should work in partnership with the family and relevant professionals.
- Timing of intervention should be determined by an evaluation of the individual's readiness and ability to change.
- Management should be planned based on formation of hypotheses, should include timescales and goals, outcomes should be measured, and treatment should be frequently reviewed.
