Description:

This guideline provides recommendations for the management of individuals with dementia residing in assisted living facilities or nursing homes. The target audience of this guideline includes healthcare professionals providing services to individuals with dementia in assisted living and nursing home settings.

Recommendations:

• Assessment/Diagnosis
• Assessment Areas
• Swallowing - Nutrition screening and assessment should be completed to assess changes in oral intake or weight; difficulty with chewing/swallowing; attention at meal time; and balance, coordination and strength/endurance with feeding.
• Treatment
• Swallowing
• Diet Modification - Dietary restrictions may be considered for individuals with difficulty swallowing or for those that are not eating enough to maintain weight.
