ASHA Glossary: Balance Billing

Balance billing refers to the ability to bill the patient for the remainder of costs not reimbursed by insurance. It is the difference between the allowable and the usual and customary rate for a specific item or service. Balance billing is not common in contracts with private insurance companies and cannot be utilized with Medicare beneficiaries.
